WORLD WAR II COMMEMORATIVE VARIOUS YEARS - SET OF 4 SOVEREIGNS

The first design features a prominent field Poppy, an emblem that has become symbolic of Flanders Fields and synonymous with remembrance, particularly on Remembrance Sunday on 11th November each year.

The second design features the iconic Victoria Cross. This was awarded to 181 different personnel for action in World War II. It is the highest award of the United Kingdom honours system. It is awarded for gallantry “in the presence of the enemy” to members of the British Armed Forces.

The third design is to commemorate the sacrifices of the Normandy Landings - “D-Day”. This is perhaps the most famous of all operations from the conflict. Taking place on 6th June 1944, it was the largest seaborne invasion in history. The design features a detailed likeness of the Normandy coastline along with the names of the five sectors; Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, Sword. Also included is a charging soldier with tank and glider.

The fourth design features a numismatic style side profile portrait of the British wartime Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. His has become a name that has become synonymous with the war triumph. He became Prime Minister in 1940 following the resignation of Neville Chamberlain. Churchill’s speeches were a great inspiration to the embattled British. His first as Prime Minister was the famous “I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears, and sweat”, with another being the one included on this coin.
