Proof coins are the highest quality coins. The dies used to strike Proof coins are hand-finished to ensure that all imperfections are removed, and the finer details of the design are preserved.
Most of the bullion coins released by the Royal Mint by tradition are measured in troy ounces of fractions thereof, as seen in the table below. But the mint also introduced metric coins measuring one kilogram of pure metal.
The 1 kg silver coins are denominated as Five Hundred Pounds (£500), with a diameter of 100mm (about 4 inches). The coins vary in design depending on the occasion. These coins are ‘yearly’ releases that are usually issued in parallel with smaller denominations with the same designs. The coins are legal tender but are not intended for circulation. These high quality proof coins are targeted at bullion investors or collectors who appreciate the special editions as pieces of art.
